I have used blogs in previous classes and I find that they are very beneficial for reflecting on activities done in class. A blog lets the teacher look into the students thinking. A blog can be better than just a written assignment on paper because you can see the progress throughout the time that the blog is used. The blog provides one place to look up multiple writings over a time period. If I used this in my classroom for writing it would be nice to see how my students improved throughout the year in their composition. Another practical use of a blog could be for students book clubs. Students could post about books on their blogs and comment to other students about books they have read. Blogging makes it simple to add pictures, videos, slideshows, buttons, and other add ons. A drawback of blogs are that some students might not have access to wireless internet at home or devices to blog on. A teacher would have to be conscientious of the students needs before assigning a big project like a blog.

Agreed on both points. Don't forget about blog uses that require two-way communication between teachers, parents, and students. As for access, it's always good to provide alternative means for posting. As an elementary teacher, you may have to handle more of this because of age restrictions on accounts.
